Derek Kaufman - Chairman of the Board

Derek Kaufman

Chairman of the Board

Derek Kaufman is Founder and CEO of the Inclusive Abundance Initiative. The Inclusive Abundance Initiative builds on Mr. Kaufman’s previous policy work in areas ranging from the Child Tax Credit in the American Rescue Plan to the Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs in the CHIPS and Science Act.

His prior career in finance included serving as Head of Global Fixed Income at the hedge fund Citadel and as Global Head of Fixed Income in the Proprietary Positioning Business at JPMorgan Chase. He was a member of the Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Investor Advisory Committee on Financial Markets.

He is currently on the Boards of Third Way, the Folger Shakespeare Library, and the Constructive Dialogue Institute, on the Advisory Council of the Sadie Collective, and on the Leadership Council of the Robin Hood Foundation.

Mr. Kaufman received a bachelor’s degree in Applied Math/Economics from Harvard College.

Mara Rudman - Board Treasurer

Mara Rudman

Board Treasurer

In addition to her position at the Miller Center, where she runs the Ripples of Hope project, Mara Rudman serves on the 2022 National Defense Strategy Commission and the Howard University College of Arts and Sciences board of visitors.

Rudman is also a senior counselor at Democracy Forward, and most recently was executive vice president for policy at the Center for American Progress/American Progress Action Fund. Rudman’s government positions have included serving as deputy assistant to the president for national security affairs in the Obama and Clinton administrations; deputy envoy for the Office of the Special Envoy for Middle East Peace at the U.S. Department of State; assistant administrator for the Middle East at the U.S. Agency for International Development; and chief counsel to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Previously, Rudman was senior vice president for policy/projects at Business Executives for National Security. She also led Quorum Strategies, a geopolitical strategic advisory firm.

Rudman has been a guest on numerous TV and radio shows and has written for and been quoted in various print publications. She received her BA from Dartmouth College and a law degree from Harvard Law School.

Board Secretary

Amy Liu is a presidential advisor and senior fellow at The Brookings Institution. She advises executive leadership and oversees special institution-wide initiatives.

Liu has nearly three decades of experience as a scholar and executive committed to improving governance and public policies at the local, national, and global levels. Most recently, she served as interim president of Brookings, where she guided the institution through a period of adaptation and change, leaving it stronger for its next chapter of leadership.

Prior to July 2022, Liu served as vice president and director of Brookings Metro, which she co-founded in 1996. Today, it is a leading resource for public and private sector leaders interested in promoting prosperous, just, and resilient communities. The program has built a track record of impact by marrying research, civic engagements, and national policy expertise.

Liu is a national expert on cities and metropolitan areas and the interplay of national, state, and local policies in expanding economic opportunity. She has worked with leaders across the U.S. to translate research insights into action and written extensively about the future of post-pandemic cities, inclusive economic growth, state and local cooperation, and the role of federal policies in supporting place-based revitalization across urban and rural areas. She has published in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Bloomberg News, and has been cited in national and local media.

Liu also served several stints in the federal government, including time as a special advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and as special assistant in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Liu holds a B.S. in social policy with a concentration in urban studies from Northwestern University and in 2015 completed the High Impact Leadership Program at Columbia Business School. She lives in Alexandria, VA with her husband and two daughters.

Steven Olikara

Board Member

Steven Olikara is a nationally recognized change-maker, entrepreneur, and political commentator. He serves as the President of Bridge Entertainment Labs (BEL), dedicated to harnessing the power of entertainment media to transform America’s divisions and strengthen democracy.

He is also the Founder & Former CEO of Future Caucus (formerly Millennial Action Project), the largest nonpartisan organization of young elected leaders in the U.S. Steven’s political commentary has been featured in numerous national media outlets, including CNN, NBC News, NPR, the Washington Post, USA Today, and more. He recently made history as the first South Asian candidate for U.S. Senate in Wisconsin, garnering national attention for his debate performance and fresh approach to politics.

Steven’s journey is featured in the documentary film, “The Reunited States,” on Amazon Prime and PBS. He also hosted the podcast series, “Meeting in Middle America,” which featured guests such as Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley and former U.S. Senator Russ Feingold. Steven is a frequent keynote speaker on civic leadership and democracy at venues such as the Aspen Ideas Festival, Harvard’s Institute of Politics, SXSW, the White House, the United Nations, and more. In 2018, he was invited to testify before Congress on issues facing millennial entrepreneurs and gig economy workers. An avid musician, Steven is co-author of the book, “JFK: The Last Speech,” on the role of artists in democracy.

Previously, Steven has advised two multi-platinum recording artists on youth empowerment and sustainable energy initiatives, including Akon Lighting Africa which electrified over 1 million homes in Africa with solar power. Steven serves on the boards of several organizations dedicated to advancing human rights, democracy, national service, and the performing arts. A proud University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate, he has been named a Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2017, a Truman Scholar, and a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum.

Sheel Mohnot

Board Member

Sheel Mohnot is Co-Founder and General Partner at Better Tomorrow Ventures (BTV), a $300M early-stage venture capital firm focused on fintech. Prior to founding BTV, Mr. Mohnot successfully exited two fintech startups

He also co-created The Pitch Podcast, a platform where founders pitch investors, which was acquired by Spotify. Earlier, he spent time at Kiva.org, where he worked on microfinance initiatives in India, and as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group.

Sheel holds a bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. Beyond his professional achievements, he is passionate for travel, vegetarian cooking, and outdoor activities.
