Role Overview

We are hiring a part-time Contract Writer-Editor to help manage our Substack, The Abundant Future, and make sure it is compelling, shapes the abundance narrative, advances our policy work, and reaches our core audiences. This person will work with both our policy and communications teams to do that – running the editorial calendar, developing ideas for posts, editing our staff’s drafts, and drafting pieces alongside them.

This is not simply a copyediting job. We want someone with editorial judgment and a point of view about how Inclusive Abundance can and should be a bigger part of the abundance discourse.

Key Responsibilities

• Own our content calendar for The Abundant Future, working with the Head of Communications to align it with our broader communications strategy and ensure we publish a steady cadence of 2-4 pieces per month. 
• Track the news cycle to develop your own pitches for how Inclusive Abundance should participate in the abundance conversation on Substack, X, and in political/policy press, and work with our policy and communications staff to shape theirs.
• Turn ideas into pieces ready for publication – whether that means fleshing out an outline from the policy team, editing a draft someone else has written, or taking a piece all the way from ideation to a finished draft to be published under a staffer’s byline.
• Ensure editorial consistency across everything we publish, including by developing a house voice and style guide.
• Help us reach our audience and build new ones, including through formats beyond the standard post – essay competitions, series, guest contributors, and other ideas you bring us.
• Fact-check pieces before they are published.

Successful candidates will have

• 4+ years of editing and writing experience in political or policy journalism, or opinion or editorial work, or magazine editing.
• Demonstrated ability to edit subject-matter experts. You have worked with people who are not professional writers to get a publishable piece out of them.
• Experience writing in someone else’s voice. 
• Fluency in the broader abundance discourse and how it’s shaping the political left. You do not need to be a housing or energy expert, but you should be curious enough to become one.
• Editorial judgment and a willingness to tell a colleague their draft is not there yet.
• Familiarity with digital-first publishing workflows (Substack or similar). 
• Strong judgment about political risk, and skill operating in a movement where allies do not always agree with each other.

Terms and Logistics

• This is a part-time independent contractor position, not an employee role, and it does not include benefits. We expect approximately 10-15 hours per week, with some flexibility week to week around publication cycles and news moments. This work is remote, though candidates in Washington, DC will have more opportunity to interact with our team in person and can use our office.
• Compensation is commensurate with experience and negotiable. We are open to either an hourly rate or a flat monthly retainer, and we welcome candidates to tell us what they typically charge for work of this kind.
• We anticipate the balance of work to be roughly 40% editing, 40% drafting, and 20% calendar and ideation. This balance may shift over time as priorities and team needs evolve.

3. An editing sample – a piece you edited rather than wrote, with a short note on what you changed and why. A before-and-after is ideal, but a description works if you can’t share the original.
